Brass Band bliss

22 March 2010

A large and diverse audience enjoyed the second annual Hall Village Brass Band Twilight Concert on Sunday afternoon. The Band entertained with a real mixture of styles, their offering including the Sullivan Fantasy, McArthur Park, and Rythm and Blues. Bandmaster Colin Fischer kept the evening flowing with his relaxed and amusing commentary.

Apart from this annual Concert, we will certainly be looking for other occasions on which we might invite the Band to add lustre to local events.

We were also treated to some really fine soprano solos from Bronwyn Douglas (pictured), with Band accompaniment. Bronwyn had stepped in at the last moment due to illness, and made a very fine contribution to the Concert. She sang Panis Angelicus, Handel's 'Let me weep', and 'I dreamed a dream' from Les Miserable, and got a great reception.

The Concert was generously supported by Hall Financial Consultants Barnett and Lilley, and by Southern Cross Media, who gave free television promotion for the event. Lerida Estate winery donated a case of their 2005 Pinto Noir as a raffle prize. Amplification gear was lent by Hall garage band 'West Texas Crude'. Thanks are due to all these supporters of the event.

During the interval funds were raised by gold coin bucket collection, and by the raffle, for the Hall Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade. Mike Woods, in a letter of thanks from the Brigade, advises that a total of $1,394.90 was raised - a terrific result! The Hall Preschool also used the occasion as a fund-raiser, by selling sausage sandwiches, soft drinks and chocolates. On early reports they earned several hundred dollars, and were very pleased to have been involved.

The Concert was a joint venture between the Progress Association and the Band, and is set to continue as a major event on the Hall and district calendar.
