New shop management on the way
30 December 2009
After nearly four and a half years running our village store, Tamara Arnold (‘Tam’ to you and I) is moving on.
Tam is looking forward to some relaxing times on her Kaveny’s Road farm with her horses. Young Anderson is going to be joining the Pony Club at Murrumbateman
As of January 1st – a great day to start such an exciting new venture – our local shop and post office will be in the hands of Gavin and Trudy Mansfield. Gavin and Trudy are both from Canberra, returning to live in Hall around three years ago after a few years in Manly. Gavin and Trudy are proud parents of five children, with another one due in June 2010.
Gavin is signed up for seven weeks of mandatory off-site training with Australia Post in January and February, after which he will be full time in the shop. Tam has kindly agreed to stay on and help during this time.
Gavin and Trudy are excited about this new venture, and look forward to carrying on this historic village business. According to Leon Smith (‘Memories of Hall’), the Hall general store ‘had a humble beginning in 1889’:
Miss Eva Southwell, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Southwell, was the first person to have charge of a store at Hall. It consisted of one large room, attached to the store homestead…Miss Southwell carried a limited supply of goods, including grocery, drapery, small goods and haberdashery”.
Gavin and Trudy are taking over a 120 year old business!
Gavin acknowledges they will have their ‘L’ plates on for a while, and will be hoping that we treat them patiently. They plan to maintain all the current product lines, and increase the range of items stocked progressively. They are keen to focus on local products as much as possible, particularly in relation to produce.
We would like to thank Tam and all her staff for the service they have given us, and wish Tam all the very best in her life after the shop.
A very warm welcome to the new ‘shoppies’ and our best wishes in their adventure.
« Pavilion makeover imminent.
